The Citizens 3-0 Man United: Hemp on target in Manchester City dominant win.

Just as Storm Claudia hit the north-west the prior day, Manchester City swept the visitors away at the Etihad. It was a convincing three-nil triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side thanks to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their leadership claims as they reinforced their place at the league summit.

Back-to-Back Losses for Manchester United

This scoreline signalled consecutive WSL losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, leaving them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their championship aspirations severely dented.

Manchester United's ability to juggle league and continental soccer with a limited squad has been a widely debated issue since they earned a place in the UCL. Reviewing the schedule, it always felt like this was the week that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Regrettably for the visitors, they seemed tired throughout, the memorable win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

The United manager had tried to freshen things up with a handful of changes. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all added energy, although the dropping of the in-form Melvine Malard to the bench caused surprise.

City, in comparison, have no similar workload worries. Andrée Jeglertz made a single alteration from last week’s win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since returning from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

Second Half

The most obvious adjustment came from Skinner at the break as Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Park came closest, striking the upright, but the visitors were offensively poor and failed to produce a one shot on goal.

The home side, meanwhile, could have increased their advantage when a delightful Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the winning team. Having failed to beat any side who ended above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against the Gunners and United to place them in a strong standing after nine matches.
